The Partition of India on August 15, 1947 created the separation of Bengal into West and East, the latter becoming East Pakistan.The terror of partition is signified in Bengali cinema, literature and song such as in the works of Ritwik Ghatak, Amitav Ghosh, Jibanananda Das and Taslima Nasreen.

It is through these works of art that Bengals’ people feel an almost violent and secret intimacy, even seventy years after partition.
